You have finished developing your dream mobile application and are now full of hopes and expectations. You are also bothered with the question of promotion of your new app, so you start searching “advertising of mobile apps” on Google and you find a variety of different articles which offer you useful ideas and tips for making your new application successful. But unfortunately, the most part of these ideas are just general. Many of them are good only for startups with a team. Below we have found for you some biggest but completely useless tips in the articles. Let’s have a look at each of them.
Be exceptional and unique
Really, how many times have you been told that your new mobile application has to be unique in order to get more people and stand out from hundreds of other apps? Usually all the articles claim that a distinguishing application is more memorable for people and that an original idea gets to the press easier and we could go on this list but we will not. The time when this was a really useful tip passed long ago and a lot of things have changed in the last few years from the point of view of application marketing. Facebook and Spotify were new and original but they are quite old now. And what about QuizUp? It is a popular app which got three million users just in three weeks. Was it unique? No, it was not. Its developers just knew how to advertise an application and how to make users share it.
Was Dolphin Browser exceptional? Hell, no. But the app developersincluded some special gesture movements in this application which was very appreciated by its users. And what can you say about the Linkedin on Facebook or Branchout? They made the option of inviting users in the sign up stream and you may either invite all of the friends or just no one. With the help of this technique they got 5.5 million users just in two months. So you should not be unique in order to be successful and advertise your mobile app. Just try to be a little better and original than the present products. It seems almost impossible to be exceptional, so if you have the opportunity in the application and you are sure you may build something much better than it, then you should do it.
Get attention of the press, lots of it
Plenty of websites advise you to reach out to the journalists and request them to write a good article about your new mobile application, idea or startup. And the truth is that no one cares about your foolish idea or product and no one is going to take their time in order to write about some thing which even does not exist. From a hundred emails journalists get every day you may have a chance that someone like your app or idea and will write and publish an article about it, but it depends on your mobile app quite much. So do not even try to create something which has already been developed before.
Your new mobile application may be new, social, exceptional and beautifully designed but if that is all you may tell people about your product then you should not even try. Unless your application is already presented, has a good video, there is started an ongoing kickstarter campaign, your app has won a prize, became number one in the Top Selling chart just in two weeks, got one million dollar revenue in half a year or it is constantly supported by a great US university, you do not actually have a chance that some journalist will become interested in your mobile application. How many email letters do your consider they get every day where lots of people claim that they have the greatest idea ever and that they have to write about that?
Look for awards
Most of the modern mobile applications are useless. Perhaps your idea is crap, as well. But who will actually care about what you or we think? We think that SnapChat is just a crap, we have no idea how WhatsApp managed to grow into sixteen billion dollar business and lots of investors at first did not believe in Facebook success. All that should matter is what your potential customers think and say. You should never forget about that. Of course, you can look for prizes if you do believe that you are going to create something really unique, but according to statistics, in most cases it is only a waste of your time and money. This process takes days to look for websites which run contests and you also have to figure out if you can take part in it and what is most importantly, you may be pretty sure that the given contest is already closed or is going to get started in months after you are ready to publish your mobile application.
Join mobile application groups on Twitter, Google+ and Facebook and post there information about your new mobile application
On social networks there are a lot of different mobile application groups where you may post information about your new app. And now read this sentence once again: there is a group where you may post info about your new app. Who really posts applications in such groups? The answer is rather simple: mobile application developers. They publish there all the crap which they create and think that the two days which they spent on developing this shit are going to get them a plane ticket right to Heaven.
The worst thing here is those people who design applications on websites where the website actually puts this application together. So who, tell me please, follows such groups? Who on earth would like to get those notifications from a Google+ group where every one constantly posts crappy mobile apps? Even in case you post your perfect application in such groups, no one is going to see it while they use this website only to advertise their own mobile apps and they are not actually interested in apps of other people.
Post on the Pinterest
You have probably read on many of the websites that you should post your new mobile application on Pinterest. For instance, this is whatwebsite writes about Pinterest the following: use images in blog, info graphics and some visual content from the application in order to make content on the Pinterest board. You may even use photos of your happy customers or hold the contests. Well, we wrote about plenty of Android applications in the last several years for fun, money or just because we were paid to do it. We cannot even imagine why on earth we should share anything about them on Pinterest.
Who really cares about the screenshots or statistics about download on Pinterest? All of the images we see there are just DIY products, decorations and design condos. If they take up almost 90% of the pinned pictures, then who will care about your page on Pinterest? You are developing a new mobile application, not the antique shop! Furthermore, it is enough to keep a Twitter and Facebook sites for your application, do you actually have time for one more social website?
However, in case your new mobile application is extremely based on pictures, then you may create a page on Pinterest for your application and start pinning images and posting or just let your current users do it. But in most situations, you should use your precious time for doing other things to advertise your new mobile app.
Visit trade shows and speak on various public events
This is probably the greatest lie. Really, have you ever been to such a show? Do you actually know what exactly it costs? And do you know how you should speak in front of unknown people? Well, you are just a mobile application developer and you are definitely not a TED speaker! Startup teams should have someone who usually do for them the talking part, a person who may sell your idea to the investors and who are able to make people believe that they like and need your new mobile application. In case you are a startup and you do have someone for doing this job for you, then this is a perfect way to advertise your mobile application. Word of mouth is perhaps the best way to distribute your mobile app while people tend to discuss what they heard at some event a few days ago. But the chances are that you are a solo app developer and you do not have extra money to take part in such events, and neither do you have the ability to give a TED talk.
Use the voicemail
We have read this on the entrepreneur website: include some creative and original mention of your new mobile application in the recording of your phone’s voicemail. This is just ridiculous. Why would anyone use such a tip? We have even a better idea: just print the name of your product on a T-shirt and wear it everywhere and every day, what a great promotion strategy! We are pretty sure that everyone in the bus or in the street will google it. Or even better option: print a QR code on your T-shirt, and soon you are going to look like some famous actors who will be always surrounded by their fans and photographers.
Start a podcast
Podcasts are called small audio recordings with different goals: tutorials, announcements of new products or news discussions, just anything. Why on earth would you spend this time making regular podcasts for the new application? Unless your product has become really successful, no one is going to listen to what you will be saying, and there will be a good chance that you will not know how to speak to your potential customers through the radio. The people you usually hear on the radio do have professional talking skills. Do you?
We are sorry if we were a bit sarcastic, but we should admit, that if you are a freelance application developer then these `useful` ideas are certainly useless for you. We understand that there exist lots of various good ways to advertise your new mobile application, but most part of them are particular from the point of view of the application’s type, the size of the app team and budget too.
When we try to google “how to advertise your mobile app” we have articles that are offering us useful and recommended ways that you can do on your own with little time, efforts and money. When an app developer has a good responsible team, they are sure to have a budget and it changes a lot of things. That is why we have created this list of useful ideas you may use to advertise your mobile application.
